SEVIS: What Is It Exactly And How Is The Fee Paid For Sevis?

What is SEVIS?

SEVIS is managed by The Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on an internet-based system that records all the information within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Using SEVIS, American schools and sponsors in the USA can control all the movements of foreign students over the internet during their stay in the country.

In the SEVIS system, there is information regarding the entry/exit to the USA, an extension of the program, a change of school, a change of address in the USA, and changes in the study program if it is for study purposes.

The history of SEVIS in America:

Enacted in 1996, SEVIS was developed to ensure domestic security and control the legal entry of more than 1 million non-immigrant students into the United States. Schools and sponsors regularly update student information in this important monitoring system.

What is the SEVIS id or number?

SEVIS Number is a 10-digit number on the acceptance document sent by the institution or exchange visitor program in the USA.

SEVIS ID starts with the letter N. The SEVIS Number is located at the top right of the official document, known as the I-20 form, of your acceptance by the schools.

How can a student get a SEVIS ID?

Students who have not previously studied in the USA may not know how to get a SEVIS ID.

Students who want to study in the USA must first obtain an official acceptance certificate from the program they will attend. Known as an I-20 or DS-2019 form, these acceptance documents can be considered the first step to applying for a visa.

Your acceptance certificate is provided by the agency you receive consultancy from. Your advisor will ask you for your bank account information, language proficiency, passport, etc. by requesting documents, which are sent to the school/sponsor in America. If you are accepted, your official I-20 or DS-2019 form will be sent to your agency.

The I-20 document is prepared for F and M visa students who will study academic, vocational, or language education. The DS-2019 document is issued for students who will do work and travel and will receive a J exchange visitor visa. The SEVIS ID or SEVIS number required to pay the SEVIS fee is included in this document. The I-20 admission document includes your education details, identity information, average annual expenses, and accommodation details. It can take 15-20 days to issue the I-20 acceptance certificate.
